It will then be rolled out step by step to many other areas of ChurchTools—for an even more consistent and convenient way to edit your content.

When you create a page or write a new post in the wiki, you’ll be using our text editor. Depending on where you are in ChurchTools—whether on the web or in the app—the editor offers a customized set of features. Here, we’ll explain how to use the formatting options for paragraphs and individual sections of text.

To format text, simply select it. A context menu with various options will then open right next to the text. Alternatively, you can select the appropriate function from the menus or use a keyboard shortcut.

The way you create the different formatting elements differs between the preview and the source code. We’ll always show you both methods here and leave a note for you if there’s anything you need to keep in mind.

By the way, you can find more keyboard shortcuts in ” How do I use the text editor?“

Format Paragraphs

If your text gets longer, break it down into logical sections and use headings at multiple levels. If you want to highlight different options or topics, include a bulleted list. When it comes to clear processes or priorities, numbered lists are a good choice. This helps other users grasp the most important information more quickly.

The following formatting options apply to one or more paragraphs.

Function

What you use them for

Keyboard shortcuts

In the source code

Text

For standard heels

Ctrl+Alt+0 / Cmd+Opt+0

Start a line without any of the characters or character strings listed below.

Headings 1 through 5

To break up longer content into sections

Ctrl+Alt+1 / Cmd+Opt+1, or 2, 3, etc.

Start a line with #, ##, etc., followed by a space.

Bulleted list

For multiple items in no particular order

Ctrl+Alt+8 / Cmd+Opt+8

Start a line with – or *.

Numbering

For steps in a fixed order

Ctrl+Alt+7 / Cmd+Opt+7

Start a line with a number, a period, and a space. It will be automatically numbered starting with 1.

Quote

For highlighted statements or quoted content

Ctrl+Shift+B / Cmd+Shift+B

Start a line with >.

Code Block

For longer technical content or blocks of text

Ctrl+Alt+C / Cmd+Opt+C

Before the block you want to highlight, create a line with “`
und schließe den Block mit einer weiteren Zeile mit
“`.

When you start a new line in a bulleted list, numbered list, or quotation, the formatting continues from where it left off. This allows you to write multiple list items or lines of a quotation one after another.

To create another separate block in a list, numbered list, or quotation, leave a line of text between the two blocks.

Formatting Text Sections

Use the following formatting options to highlight one or more words in a sentence or paragraph.

Function

What you use them for

Keyboard Shortcuts

In the source code

Fat

To highlight important terms

Ctrl+B / Cmd+B

**bold**

Italics

For subtle highlights

Ctrl+I / Cmd+I

*italics*

Struck through

To visibly mark something as completed or no longer valid

Ctrl+Alt+X / Cmd+Opt+X

~~durchgestrichen~~

Inline code

For short technical terms or character strings

Ctrl+E / Cmd+E

`Code`

Insert link

To link to web addresses

Ctrl+K / Cmd+K

[Linktext](https://...)

For links , you can customize the link text so that it displays appropriate text instead of the web address (URL). Instead of the URL https://meine-gemeinde.church.tools/?=churchhome#HomeView/, you can have the same web address displayed as, for example, the Home page of our ChurchTools.

tip

Choose link text that makes it immediately clear where the link leads.
